Delta Air Lines kicked off a Labor Day sale slashing basic-economy round-trip fares between Anchorage and Seattle from more than $400 down to $259, and Alaska Airlines has matched that price while pushing its own discounts on other routes. Fairbanks flyers get their own version of the deal too, with round-trips down to Seattle priced at $261 in basic economy. Alaska Airlines, for its part, isn't just matching Delta on Seattle. It's also discounting its own mainland routes that have nothing to do with the Pacific Northwest, with Anchorage-Atlanta round-trips as low as $279 in basic economy and an identical $279 fare to Detroit, though Detroit availability is thin, mostly a handful of dates in late October with a few more scattered into January and early February. This sale did not appear in a vacuum. Delta and Alaska have been sparring over the Anchorage market all year. Delta resumed and expanded several mainland routes into Anchorage this past May, including nonstops to Detroit, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, adding capacity on a route map that used to be lighter on mainline service. Alaska answered by rolling out seven new routes of its own between March and June 2026 built around its Anchorage and Portland hubs specifically, including new Anchorage-to-Boise and Anchorage-to-Spokane nonstops, two of the very cities now showing up in Delta's discounted fare list. An airline spokesperson described the strategy as shifting connections through Portland and Anchorage to take pressure off Seattle's runways and gates, which are increasingly dedicated to Alaska's growing international widebody flying following its merger with Hawaiian. In other words, this week's fare sale is a visible skirmish in a competition that has been building for months, and travelers booking now are catching the discount side of that fight. So what should you actually do? If you have any flexible fall or winter travel between Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, California, Atlanta or Detroit, price it out today, since both the fare and the booking window close Monday. Basic economy on both carriers strips out seat selection, checked bags and the ability to change your ticket without a fee, so if your trip involves connecting flights, winter weather risk, or you simply want a bag included, run the math on the main-cabin upgrade before you buy; on the pricier routes it can add well over half the base fare. If Monday's deadline passes before you book, don't assume the opportunity is gone for good.
