United Airlines is offering IMTS attendees up to 7% off eligible fares with a show promo code, and Southwest is offering 4% to 10% off through its SWABIZ corporate booking portal for travel between September 8 and 23. Those discounts are aimed at people actually attending, but their existence is itself a signal: both of Chicago's dominant carriers are pricing for a bump in traffic through O'Hare and Midway that week, on top of whatever normal mid-September schedule they'd otherwise run. So what should you actually do? If you're one of the 90,000 people heading to IMTS, book through the official housing portal rather than a generic travel site if you haven't already, since the negotiated blocks are typically the cheapest legitimate option left this close to the show, and use the United or Southwest discount codes if either airline fits your routing. If you're flying into Chicago that week for something unrelated to manufacturing, don't assume downtown hotel prices will look like a normal September; book now rather than waiting, and consider neighborhoods away from the South Loop and McCormick Place corridor, like River North, the West Loop or Lincoln Park, where room supply isn't being squeezed by the same convention block. If you have flexibility on which Chicago airport to use, remember Midway now carries Southwest's entire Chicago schedule following its exit from O'Hare earlier this year, so it's worth comparing fares and connection options at both airports rather than defaulting to O'Hare out of habit, especially with United's O'Hare hub absorbing a share of the IMTS-driven bump. And if your trip is flexible on dates, shifting even a day or two outside the September 14-19 window will likely get you meaningfully better hotel rates and a calmer airport experience, since the pressure on rooms and flights is concentrated tightly around the show's exact run, not spread across the whole month.
