New Tatkal Token System: What It Actually Covers

If you've seen headlines this week claiming Indian Railways just overhauled Tatkal ticket booking nationwide, it's worth slowing down before you change how you book your next ticket. A new token system for Tatkal bookings did start on August 1, 2026, but after checking multiple reports against each other, the actual rollout is narrower than most of the coverage implies: it's a pilot confined to the Kota Division of West Central Railway, one of eighteen railway zones nationwide, and it only touches bookings made in person at physical reservation counters.
Here's what changed at those Kota Division counters. Previously, a passenger wanting a Tatkal ticket would often have to collect a token, then rejoin a separate queue to actually book, effectively waiting twice. Under the new process, passengers get a numbered token when they arrive that fixes their place in line, and the whole visit, from token to ticket, is meant to wrap up in one go rather than two rounds of queuing. Token windows are split by class: AC Tatkal tokens go out roughly between 8:30 and 9:00 or 9:30 AM depending on the counter, and non-AC tokens follow shortly after, ahead of the standard Tatkal booking windows of 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes, both opening one day before travel as usual. Each counter is initially issuing a limited batch, around 10 tokens for AC and 15 for non-AC, though railway officials have indicated that number could be adjusted based on how much demand shows up. Once the tokened passengers are processed, any remaining Tatkal seats go back to first-come, first-served.
The system also separates passengers into two categories. Category A covers people booking for themselves or immediate family, and they get served first, provided they carry a valid photo ID and, where relevant, proof of the family relationship. Category B covers everyone else, including passengers booking on behalf of others, who get served afterward and need to show an Aadhaar card or another valid photo ID. Tokens themselves are non-transferable and tied to the name on them, so you can't hand yours to a friend further back in line.
What hasn't changed, and this is the part that matters most for the vast majority of Tatkal bookers, is anything about the IRCTC website or app. Aadhaar-based authentication for online Tatkal bookings, which Indian Railways phased in back in mid-2025, remains the standard: you still need your IRCTC account linked and verified to Aadhaar, and OTP verification on your registered mobile still applies at the time of booking. Authorized booking agents are still barred from making Tatkal bookings in the first 30 minutes of each class's booking window, a restriction that predates this pilot and exists specifically to stop agents from scooping up seats before ordinary passengers can log in. None of that is new as of August 1; it's the same framework that's applied for the past year.
So what should you actually do with this news? If you regularly book Tatkal tickets in person at a reservation counter within the Kota Division, meaning stations across the Kota, Bharatpur, Sawai Madhopur and surrounding stretch of Rajasthan that fall under West Central Railway's Kota Division, expect the new token process starting now. Arrive during the token distribution window for your class rather than at the booking window itself, bring a valid photo ID, and know that immediate-family bookings get priority over bookings made for other people. If your journey involves an origin or booking counter outside that division, this pilot doesn't apply to you yet, and there's no confirmed timeline for whether or when it will expand to other zones; officials have only said a wider rollout could follow if the pilot cuts down on counter overcrowding.
If you're one of the large majority of travelers who book Tatkal through the IRCTC website or app rather than walking up to a counter, this announcement changes nothing about your process. Keep doing what you've been doing: log in a few minutes before the window opens, have your Aadhaar-linked profile and traveler details saved in advance so you're not typing under pressure, and be ready to enter the OTP quickly since Tatkal seats on popular routes and trains typically sell out within minutes of the window opening. Given how much of the recent coverage has overstated this as a nationwide overhaul, it's worth checking directly with your local reservation counter or the IRCTC site before you plan a counter visit around a token system that, right now, exists only in one railway division.
