Amtrak Baggage Rules — Carry-On, Checked and Special Items

Last reviewed

Quick Answer

The short answer

Amtrak permits two carry-on bags plus two personal items per passenger at no charge, with a 50 lb limit per bag — an allowance no airline comes close to. Checked baggage is free where available, but it is only offered at staffed stations on certain routes, which is the constraint that actually matters.

Key Travel Facts & Insights

  • Two carry-on bags plus two personal items, free, up to 50 lbs each
  • Checked baggage is free but only available at staffed stations on certain routes
  • No security screening and no liquid restrictions on Amtrak
  • Small pets are permitted on many routes for a fee, unlike most rail systems

Carry-on allowance

Each passenger may bring two carry-on bags up to 50 lbs and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each, plus two personal items up to 25 lbs each. That is a substantially larger allowance than any airline offers, and it is free.

There is no security screening on Amtrak, so there are no liquid restrictions and no requirement to remove electronics. You board with your bags and stow them in overhead racks or the luggage racks at the end of each car.

Checked baggage — the availability constraint

Amtrak offers free checked baggage of up to four bags — two free and two for a fee on some routes — but only between stations that are both staffed and equipped for baggage service, on trains that carry a baggage car.

That is the real limitation. Many stations on the network are unstaffed platforms with no baggage handling at all, and many corridor trains carry no baggage car. Verify checked baggage availability for both your origin and destination station before planning around it.

  • Check availability at both stations, not just one
  • Bags must be checked at least 45 minutes before departure
  • Checked bags are limited to 50 lbs and 75 linear inches
  • Long-distance routes are far more likely to offer checked service than corridor routes

Special and oversized items

Amtrak accommodates items airlines charge heavily for or refuse outright. Bicycles travel on many routes, either in a bike rack in the coach or checked in a box, at a modest fee. Skis, golf bags and musical instruments travel within the standard allowance on most services.

This is a genuine advantage for travellers moving bulky equipment. On some routes the Auto Train even carries your car, which no other mode of public transport in the US does.

Pets

Amtrak permits small dogs and cats up to 20 lbs including carrier on many routes, for a fee, on journeys up to a published maximum duration. Pets travel in the coach with you in a carrier under your seat.

Reservations for pets are limited per train and must be made in advance — this cannot be arranged at the station on the day. Service animals travel free and without restriction.

What is prohibited

  • Firearms in carry-on baggage — permitted only in checked baggage on routes with checked service, declared and in a locked hard case
  • Hazardous materials, flammables and compressed gases
  • Items exceeding the size and weight limits
  • Corpses and hazardous waste, which Amtrak specifically enumerates

Common questions

How much luggage can I bring on Amtrak?

Two carry-on bags up to 50 lbs each plus two personal items up to 25 lbs each, all free — an allowance no airline approaches. Checked baggage of up to four bags is also available free on routes and at stations that support it, which is the real constraint.

Does Amtrak have liquid restrictions like the TSA?

No. There is no security screening on Amtrak, so there are no liquid restrictions, no requirement to remove electronics, and no 3-1-1 bag. You board with your luggage as you would a bus.

Can I take my dog on Amtrak?

On many routes, yes — small dogs and cats up to 20 lbs including carrier, for a fee, on journeys up to a published maximum duration. Pet spaces are limited per train and must be reserved in advance; you cannot arrange this at the station on the day. Service animals travel free.
