Most US airlines abolished change fees on standard economy and above, but the fare difference remains — and it is almost always the larger number. Basic Economy fares generally cannot be changed at all after the first 24 hours. Change online rather than by phone where you can; the price is the same and the queue is not.

Open your confirmation email or the airline app and identify the fare brand — Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Blue Basic, Saver and so on. This single detail determines whether a change is possible and what it costs. If it is the cheapest fare the airline sells, assume it is non-changeable until you confirm otherwise.
If the airline has changed your departure time significantly, cancelled a leg, or added a connection, you are entitled to a free change to a reasonable alternative — or a full cash refund if you would rather not travel. Look for a schedule change notice in your email before you pay for anything.
Search the new date as if you were booking fresh. The fare difference you will pay is the gap between what you originally paid and the current price of the new flight in the same fare class. On a busy date that can exceed the original ticket price.
Open Manage Booking, select Change Flight, choose the new date and pay any difference. This is the same transaction an agent would perform, at the same price, without the hold time. Save the new confirmation.
Seat assignments, paid seat upgrades, pet reservations, unaccompanied minor arrangements and special meals do not always carry across to the new flight. Verify each one after the change rather than assuming.
There are two numbers in any flight change: the change fee and the fare difference. Most US carriers removed the change fee on standard economy and above for domestic and much international travel. Almost nobody removed the fare difference, and on a change made close to departure the fare difference is usually the far bigger number.
If the new flight is cheaper than what you paid, policy varies. Southwest gives you the difference back as flight credit. Most other carriers keep it. That asymmetry is worth knowing before you move a trip to a cheaper date expecting a partial refund.
Basic Economy and its equivalents — United Basic Economy, Delta Basic Economy, American Basic Economy, JetBlue Blue Basic, Alaska Saver, Air Canada Basic — are generally non-changeable and non-refundable once the 24-hour window closes. The ticket has no residual value if you do not fly it.
If there is any realistic chance your plans will move, the price gap between Basic Economy and the next fare up is usually smaller than the cost of writing off the ticket.
Moving to a different flight on the same day is handled under same-day change or same-day standby rules, not the normal change process, and it is often much cheaper. Most carriers charge a modest fee and waive it for elite members. Standby is frequently free.
This is the cheapest way to catch an earlier flight home. Ask at the gate or check the app on the day rather than paying a full fare difference the night before.
A significant schedule change by the airline flips the economics entirely. Under US Department of Transportation rules, if the carrier cancels or significantly changes your flight and you do not accept the alternative offered, you are entitled to a refund to your original form of payment — not a voucher, and without having to argue for it.
Airlines are also generally willing to rebook you free of charge onto a different flight after a significant schedule change, including one that suits you better than the one they proposed. Ask.

Generally no. Airline tickets are not transferable between people. Most carriers will correct a genuine misspelling free or for a small fee, but they will not substitute a different traveller. Southwest is a partial exception, allowing transferable flight credit on some fare types.
Compare both. If your original fare was cheap and the new date is expensive, the fare difference can exceed the cost of a fresh one-way ticket on a low-fare carrier. If your original fare was expensive and the new date is cheap, changing preserves more value. Price the new flight before you decide.
